Well the holidays slowed us down a bit. Not to mention the rain that came with it. But we are back on track for fixing the banding around the house and preparing to lower the house down onto the footers. We decided to include a storm shelter under the new section of the house - talk about a big hole. Depending on the day, it's almost like having a swimming pool!
The test results came back on the well water and it looks pretty good. No VOCs or heavy metals. Now we just have to decide whether or not we want to rebuilt the well or cover it up. If you ask me, I say rebuild it and make good use of it!
We continue to find "artifacts" under the house and in the backyard. They are probably not of interest to anyone but me... a true dirt digger and antiquities lover. I sent several photos of the bottles we found to a university department that studies bottle typology (yea, there really is a department that studies that stuff). Turns out the timeframe for the bottles ranges from 1890s to 1920s. One of the neatest bottles was a thick amber Coca-Cola bottle from Huntsville. The other was a post civil-war medicine bottle - just not sure what kind.
We should soon have the floorplans complete too. Although, I think the architect would prefer to drywall me in the walls of the house, then as to deal with me anymore. It can be very difficult to decide on ONE floorplan idea, when you have to start from scratch and there are some many possibilities. It's like the dessert table at a church potluck!
Oh, and by the way... we DID indeed break the glass. Poor Fernando tried to remove the old panes of glass, by several methods, and all of it shattered. It broke my heart. But now I look at it as an opportunity to go dumpster diving and treasure pickin' to find replacements. Already found several windows in the trash from an old victorian house in Illinois! Just call us Alabama Pickers!
